Nankesido Education and Welfare Trust (NEWT)

Welcome to our website!

Who we are

NEWT is a registered charity (number 1148470).

Over 15 years ago Deacon Sean Murphy of St Edmunds Catholic Church in Beckenham established a small charity, a precursor to the Nankesido Education and Welfare Trust, to support the people of Nankesido (Lower Saltpond), a poor coastal village in Ghana. Most of the people of Nankesido make their living from farming, fishing, labouring, selling goods and agricultural produce, or from hair-dressing and sewing.

What we do

We aim to maximise the life chances of the people of Nankesido through our focus on education whilst providing welfare to the most vulnerable people of the village. Our work encompasses anything from sponsoring young people through college; buying basic provisions for poor families e.g. shoes, school uniform, funding urgent household repairs, to paying for medical treatments , sinking bore holes, replacing a storm damaged school roof or building a computer school.

Our strict governance ensures that every penny spent by NEWT goes directly to the cause with no administration costs or overheads, which sets us apart from many other charitable organisations. We have a trusted team of clergy, community leaders and craftsmen who, working in close collaboration with the trustees, oversee our activities in Nankesido.

Every penny counts

We are seeking to provide a long-term legacy in Nankesido and to build on the fantastic work completed to date. Every penny you donate will make a significant difference to the lives of the people in this impoverished village.

How else can I help?

NEWT is actively seeking volunteers to help in fund raising and providing new ideas to our team.  If you wish to become involved, please contact us by EMAIL.

Our Work

Over 15 years ago Deacon Sean began a small fund to support the children and young people from a region in Ghana called Lower Saltpond, where he had long-standing family connections. Thanks to the generous support of our supporters, this fund grew and is a fully-fledged charity called Nankesido Education and Welfare Trust (NEWT).
